Apple has jumped into the business of leasing iPhones, and it could lead other smartphone vendors to do the same thing.
One of the more important
announcements to come out of
yesterday’s cornucopia of product reveals from Apple was its new iPhone Upgrade plan. It moves Apple further away from its reliance on carriers to sell and help market iPhones, and puts another nail in
the coffin of the two-year phone contract model.
The plan essentially invites customers to drive past AT&T and Verizon to buy their iPhones directly from the Apple Store. Once they sign the two- year financing agreement, they can get a new, unlocked iPhone each year plus Apple Care, starting at a little over $32 a month.
Apple has yet to explain how customers would be able to opt out of the contract, but already it’s being touted as better value for money than the plans offered by traditional carriers.
