Breaking news in the Destiny community today.
The quest to unlock the fabled Sleeper Simulant
has finally been activated, but it wasn’t an
intrepid community member that unlocked the
secret.
It was just Bungie.
Players who have found Banshee’s four Fusion
Rifle relics woke up today to simply find a new
quest on their screen, The First Firewall, which
has players travel to Earth and complete a new
mission, after which they’re rewarded with a
“Curious Transceiver.”
The device has you input a sequence of four
codes, but early this morning, they’ve already
been cracked . Based on the way Knights and
Taken Knights spawn in the mission itself, the
codes are as follows:
1 2 1 1 2 2 2 1 2
1 2 1 1 2 2 1 1
1 2 2 2 1 2 2 2 1 1
1 2 1 2 1 2 1 1
After that, you move into another mission, this
one a timed journey to the top of the area where
you found the Stealth drive in Cayde’s stash,
and after that, at long last, you’ll receive the
IKELOS Fusion Core, the object that has been the
source of fascination for many, many mystery
hunters as the community has searched for the
Sleeper.
After that, we now know exactly what each node
means:
Heavy Power Coupling – Dismantle any
legendary or higher heavy weapon.
Ionized Shell Harmonics – Complete The
Archive mission on Venus on any difficulty.
WARSAT//MK19/TERRA/RSPN – Complete a
‘Defend the Warsat’ public event on Earth.
WARSAT//MK19/LUNA/RSPN – Complete a
‘Defend the Warsat’ public event on the Moon.
WARSAT//MK19/MARS/CHLM – Complete a
‘Defend the Warsat’ public event on Mars .
After that, the fusion core is charged, and you
return it to Banshee-44, the gunsmith.
And then…
No Sleeper Simulant.
Whatever happens next either hasn’t been
discovered by fans, or with the events of the
day, it seems more likely it’s hidden behind yet
another time gate that Bungie will activate
themselves.
Alright, catch your breath. Ready? Okay.
I’m pretty disappointed in how this played out.
The hunt for the Sleeper Simulant has been
probably the most fascinating aspect of The
Taken King so far, and finding new mysteries
like the Black Spindle and Cult Ghost have been
some of the most exciting events of the
expansion.
The fact that this entire time the mission was
just waiting to be activated by Bungie at an
arbitrary point in time is more than a little
frustrating. People have been poring over every
inch of the map, all the secret codes of the
Collector’s Edition and coming up with
conspiracy theories so grand they’ll make your
head spin.
But in the end the Sleeper Simulant quest was
tied to…nothing? There are a few options as to
what happened here.
The first, and most likely from my perspective,
is that the quest was bugged. You were supposed
to turn in the four relics and activate this quest
weeks ago, but it just never triggered until
Bungie fixed something.
Or perhaps it really was a time gate, and Bungie
just decided to activate it today for some
arbitrary reason we can’t understand.
If we do want to pretend the community did or
could have solved a mystery to unlock the quest,
maybe there was some clue pointing to the date
October 7th , hidden away in all this secret
hunting (also it’s Armsday, a significant weekly
Banshee holiday). Or maybe some intrepid
person found a clue that activated the quest for
everyone. But I’d say the first two options are
the most likely answer.
It’s strange. I expected the mystery to have a
relatively simple solution in the end, like just
some new door open in a daily Heroic, but this?
Given how feverishly fans have been hunting, if
the quest was bugged or completely un-findable
and Bungie kept quiet about it, that’s pretty
disappointing, and kind of taints future mystery
hunting as well. Why bother trying to find No
Time to Explain when Bungie can just press a
button at a later date and turn on the quest?
I’m off to go do this mission sequence for myself
so I can at least catch up to the currently found
state of the quest. It’s certainly exciting, but I
am more than a little perplexed as to the method
behind Bungie’s madness here.
